Wisdom from a dog I’ve never met

For the past month or so, Don Miller and his dog Lucy (who you see above) have been churning out some of the most insightful and poignant blog posts I’ve ever seen.

Don is an author. He’s pretty good too. He’s the guy who wrote Blue Like Jazz and most recently, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years. He also started this great organization called the Mentoring Project. Needless to say he’s a busy guy.

So to keep his blog fresh, he asked his dog Lucy to take over writing duties for a bit and, to be perfectly honest, it’s the best thing to ever happen to that site.

Lucy simply writes from her perspective. Like our favorite puppies are, she’s often inquisitive of human nature bringing questions to the table that give us cause to stand back and marvel at just what we are and what we can become.

Lucy fell ill recently with salmon poisoning and was pretty close to death. Don said goodbye and everything as they sat in the ICU of an animal hospital.

Thankfully though, she’s improving and should be discharged in a few days. All of Lucy’s posts have been amazing up to this point, but this last one, dealing with the concept of death, broke my heart.

In it she takes a look at how little dogs know about death and how much people live in fear of it.

And why is this? It’s because after the Father gave us everything we needed, we thought we needed more. We needed that apple and we wanted all the knowledge it held from us.

But we learned too much. And it’s still too much for us to handle.

Ever since, we’ve painted ourselves into this corner with this idea of finality while the Being who created us and is the very antithesis of finality asks us simply to trust Him to carry this load we’ve unnecessarily taken on.

It’s a mess really.

Please check out Lucy’s posts, especially this last one which you can find here:
